World Cup 2014

The World Cup starts today in Brazil. I was never a huge soccer fan before, though a semester in Argentina and almost four years (!!) living in Mexico has slowly but surely changed that.

That being said, I'm definitely having conflicting feelings about the World Cup -- and I'm not the only one. On one hand, it's exciting: it's soccer / fútbol bringing countries together while the world watches. On the other hand, the corruption, exorbitant spending that ignores the needs of the Brazilian people, unrest, violence, etc. is infuriating, frustrating, and depressing.

I think John Oliver's segment on the World Cup was fantastic: funny, fact-filled, eye-opening, and frustrating at the same time. I've included the video below and highly recommend it if you haven't seen it already. My only complaint would be that he fails to mention relocations and the "pacification" of the favelas in preparation for the 2014 World Cup.

And speaking of the World Cup.... guess who's there now? And watched the Mexican National Team's training the other day? And got a photo with Mexico's Head Coach?
